ADAM JOSEPH FRANCIQUE: High school teacher by day – Urban Runner by night
Adam Joseph Francique is an integral part of the New York Urban Running scene. He is part of the adidas Runners NYC, supports the Washington Heights neighborhood with free fitness sessions and his merchandise is popular even in Berlin’s running scene. He does all of that in addition to his main job and even shares it with the world on his successful Instagram account @adamrunsnyc. Sheesh.
In New York we went running and started chatting. For BERLIN, ALTER! Adam answered a few short questions about himself, his sports and his relationship with Berlin.
INTRO
Short introduction – what do you do?
I am a high school teacher by day and an Urban Runner by night.
THE BODY PRJCT
What is “The Body PRJCT”?
“The Body PRJCT” is a project in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, which offers free workouts during the summer 5 days a week. The idea is to provide people with lower income and less fitness opportunities with a healthy sports program. The sessions consist of HIIT training, stair and hill sprints, as well as yoga.
NEVER NOT BOOTLEGGIN’
Why have you started the label “Never Not Bootleggin’ “?
My partner Hector (@hecisdead) wanted me to make him a bootleg shirt with the words “Anti Running Running Club” (instead of Anti Social Social Club). That’s how NNB started. Once we printed two shirts and posted ‘em on Instagram, the DM’s started to come in. Then we decided to sell the shirts. We developed the idea and started to get more creative and fuse Running Culture with streetwear brands.
A portrait of you is currently on display in the Brooklyn Museum. What is the exhibition about?
The exhibit is called “Black History, Black Future”. On the occasion of “Black History Month” it celebrates people of color who make a difference in their own neighborhood. I am one of eight individuals whose portraits are on display.
THE PERFECT DAY
What does your perfect day look like?
My perfect day starts with waking up, looking over to my son and wife. He always finds his way to our bed. I begin to get ready for work. When I get home is when I begin to think running, fitness, and how to grow the community.
Greatness!
ADAMS’ RUNNING SOUND
His favorite tune for running is Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”.
SPORT
THE PERFECT SESSION
Greatness! And then when you go out, what does your perfect running session look like? Let’s talk about running.
I like to run 3 days a week. My busy life does not always allow me to go for a run every single day. I make sure to always make a tempo run, a track session and a long run. These are the three essentials that I need to stay in shape and to be ready for races at any time.
RUNNING HOTSPOTS IN NYC
Where do you like to go running in NYC?
I spend a lot of time running in my own neighborhood, Washington Heights. Meanwhile, I venture off to other areas such as the Lower East Side and Park Slope. And I love running the George Washington Bridge. That’s my favorite!
WORKOUT HOTSPOTS IN NYC
And where do you do your workouts?
To be honest, I like the park. There are hundreds of gyms in the city, forcing different types of works. “Sit here and you must do this workout in this movement.” In a park, I am able to learn how my body can move, flex, bend and build. It’s almost my chance as a trainer to create workouts instead of being told which ones to do.
REGENERATION
How do you recover from a hard session or a race?
Honestly, I’m bad in foam rolling. I am very good at eating and drinking, though. So after a tough session I begin to hydrate and eat. Especially a lot of water. I’m not really into sugary drinks.
I agree. Eating good is key.
ADAMS’ RACEDAY ROUTINE
- Waking up
- Eating dry breakfast (whole wheat bagel, cereal)
- Hydrating with water
- Light jog
- Mobility sesh
- Meditate
BERLIN
Speaking of good food! When we met in Berlin for the first time, we had those ice cream rolls with Oreos. Still can’t forget about this ice cream! Together with other captains and coaches of the adidas Runners NYC you visited Berlin for a global launch event from adidas. How did you like the city?
Berlin was great. I had a chance to visit twice in one year. Berlin reminds me of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
FAVORITE SPOT IN BERLIN
Nice, I have heard that from a lot of people! What’s your favorite spot in Berlin so far?
My favorite spot in Berlin has to be the Fernsehturm Berlin. It was really dope to see the entire city from that height. It sounds touristy, but I like to do things that separated myself from the equation. You learn more that way.
What are you looking forward to on your next Berlin trip? What would you like to see?
The Berlin marathon is my next thing to conquer in Berlin. I missed out last time because of scheduling, but next time I’m there and have the opportunity to run it, I will, 100%!
